Summer with Coloured Contact Lenses: What You Can (and Probably Shouldn’t) Do at the Pool, While Exercising, or Lounging in the Sun

Summer is the perfect time to shine – literally. Sunshine, water, festivals, and fresh new looks... and what better way to switch things up than with a pair of coloured contact lenses? Whether you're heading to the beach, a concert, or just out for an ice cream, a striking gaze is always in season.
But if you're new to contact lenses, you might have a few questions. No worries – here's your easy-going summer guide to enjoying coloured lenses with confidence and care.

Can I Wear Coloured Contact Lenses in the Water?

Short answer: Best not to.
Longer answer: Water – whether from pools, lakes, or the sea – can contain chlorine, salt, bacteria, or sand, none of which your eyes (or your lenses) particularly enjoy. If water gets between the lens and your eye, it can lead to irritation or, worse, infection.

Want to wear them for a quick selfie by the pool or to complete a look? Go ahead – just try not to dunk your head. And once you're done, take them out, give them a proper clean, and store them in fresh solution. A little splash probably won’t hurt, but swimming underwater with lenses in? Not a great idea.

What About Sport, Dancing, and Summer Adventures?

Good news – coloured contact lenses (including prescription ones!) are often more practical than glasses for being on the move. They don't slide down your nose, fog up, or risk snapping during a fall.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Sweat, wind, and dust can cause irritation or shift the lens. It's a good idea to carry a small kit with solution, a case, and some eye drops.

  • Sunglasses are still a must, even with lenses – your eyes need protection from UV rays.

  • If you’re out all day (hello, festivals), give your eyes a break every now and then – and please, no rubbing your eyes with sandy or greasy fingers!

What If I Fall Asleep Wearing Them?

Let’s be honest – who hasn’t dozed off in the sun, on a towel, or in the back seat of a car? Falling asleep with lenses in isn’t the end of the world, but your eyes might not be thrilled.

You might notice:

  • dryness,

  • a scratchy feeling,

  • slightly blurred vision.

What to do? Blink a few times, use some hydrating drops, and if it still feels off, take the lenses out, clean them thoroughly, and give your eyes a rest – a pair of comfy specs will do just fine for the rest of the day.

A Few Tips for Beginners (and the Forgetful):

  • Always wash your hands before handling your lenses. Summer = sun cream, sticky food, sand… and germs.

  • Never share your lenses – not even with your best mate. Each eye is unique.

  • Coloured lenses are available with prescription, so you don’t have to choose between seeing clearly and looking fab.

  • Keep a spare pair of glasses at home – your eyes will thank you.

And Most Importantly: Enjoy Yourself!

Coloured contact lenses are a fun, easy way to refresh your summer style – whether you’re into cosplay, planning a pool party, or just fancy trying something new. With a bit of care and common sense, you can enjoy them all summer long.
