Aloe vera is one of the most highly valued plants in natural skincare for the face, body and hair. In Korean and Japanese cosmetics, it has a firm place – and it’s no surprise. Its effects are versatile, gentle and at the same time very effective. In this article, we’ll look at what Aloe vera is, how it is obtained and why it shouldn’t be missing from your beauty routine.

What is Aloe vera?

Aloe vera (also known as true aloe) is a succulent plant originating from North Africa. Its leaves are full of a clear gel that contains more than 200 bioactive substances – including vitamins (A, C, E, B12), enzymes, amino acids, minerals and polysaccharides.

How is Aloe obtained?

The gel is obtained by gentle pressing or filleting the fleshy part of the plant’s leaves. For cosmetic purposes, so-called aloe vera extract or aloe vera juice is often used, which is produced by processing and stabilising fresh gel. In quality cosmetics, it is often listed in the ingredients as Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice.

Effects of Aloe in cosmetics

Thanks to its high water and polysaccharide content, it helps to intensely hydrate the skin, while its cooling and anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and healing properties provide immediate relief for irritation, after sun exposure or shaving. Aloe is rich in vitamins A, C, E and B12, minerals and enzymes that support the healing of minor wounds, speed up cell regeneration and reduce redness. Thanks to its antioxidant content, it also protects the skin from free radicals and slows the signs of ageing, helping to maintain its elasticity and freshness. It can limit the growth of bacteria on the skin, helping to prevent acne and soothe existing inflammation. Aloe vera is also effective in hair and scalp care – it hydrates dry and damaged hair, soothes an irritated scalp, supports hair growth and helps fight dandruff thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

In summer aloe vera brings several benefits – not only does it cool and soothe sun-irritated skin, but thanks to its high water content (up to 99%), it provides intense hydration that the skin needs after time in the sun. It also helps reduce redness and itching and soothes minor burns.

In winter aloe is a valuable helper in protecting against dryness caused by frost and dry air from heating. It creates a light protective film on the skin that locks in moisture without clogging pores. It acts as a natural moisturiser while also supporting the renewal of the skin barrier, which is often weakened during colder months.

In Korean and Japanese cosmetics, you’ll often find aloe combined with other plant extracts that enhance its effects.

Facial care

Aloe vera is best known for its soothing, hydrating and regenerating effects. It is ideal for irritated, sensitive or acne-prone skin. It helps reduce redness, eases inflammation and supports the healing of minor wounds. In lightweight gels and essences, it provides hydration without a greasy feel.

Body care

In body cosmetics, Aloe is used mainly in hydrating gels, lotions or soothing after-sun creams. It is excellent for sensitive and dry skin because it refreshes and calms it without weighing it down.

Hair care

Aloe is also great for the scalp – it reduces itching and irritation and supports hair growth. In hair masks and shampoos, it helps strengthen hair roots, adds shine and makes detangling easier. Thanks to its hydrating properties, it is also suitable for dry and damaged hair. You can also use Aloe gel as a hair wrap – apply to damp hair, leave on for 10–15 minutes and rinse.

Who is Aloe suitable for?

Aloe is suitable for all age groups, from teenagers with acne to mature skin needing regeneration. Thanks to its gentleness, it is also popular in children’s cosmetics. It is non-comedogenic, so it doesn’t clog pores, making it a great choice for problematic and oily skin too.

Final tip

When choosing products with Aloe, check the ingredients – Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice should be as high up the list as possible. The closer it is to the beginning of the list, the higher its concentration in the product.

Try cosmetics with a high Aloe content.
