Are you thinking about contact lenses and not sure what wearing them involves? Then we have a few pieces of advice and tips to get you started.
Probably the most important information is that you don’t need to be afraid of anything. Wearing lenses is comfortable; after all, millions of people wear them all over the world. Contact lenses are classified differently in different countries; in some places they are directly considered a medical device, and as such their manufacture is always linked to strict supervision and checks, and the lenses must meet many regulations and certifications.
How do you recognise quality lenses? The first clue is the price – if something is very cheap, it cannot meet all the regulations and manufacturing requirements. The second clue can be the country of manufacture – if the lenses are Made in Korea, Malaysia, the EU, the USA, etc., then there is a small risk that you will come across a poor-quality brand. And the third clue, perhaps the most important, is – the lens brand, or rather information about the seller – if someone has been selling lenses for several years and has quality independent reviews, then there is a small risk that they are selling poor-quality products.
But now for some tips to get you started:
- wash your hands (not with soap, which can irritate if it comes into contact with the eyes).
- when handling the lens, use your fingertips, never your nails (they are sharp and can damage the lens)
- never rinse lenses with ordinary water. Use only contact lens solution.
- place the lens on the pad of your index finger and check that it is not damaged. The lens must have the shape of a bowl (edges turned upwards) – if the edges turn outwards, the lens needs to be turned the right way round. With some coloured lenses, this can be identified by the colour of the lens.
- with your other hand, hold your lower and upper eyelid and insert the lens into your eye. You don’t have to place the lens directly in the centre of the eye; it will centre itself. Slowly close your eye and blink slowly a few times. This allows the lens to find the optimal position in your eye.
- if the lens is fitted correctly, there is no unpleasant sensation or restriction of vision
- when fitting for the first time, you may experience unpleasant sensations. In that case, remove the lens and let your eye rest. Gradually you should get used to it. Wearing should never be painful or uncomfortable for the eye.
- don’t be alarmed if at the beginning the lens falls out of your eye on the first blink, or if when inserting it doesn’t stick in the eye but instead turns and stays on your finger. It just takes a bit of practice and getting rid of nervousness. After a few attempts you’ll be able to put them in even without looking; it really is simple.
- removing the lens from the eye is not rocket science either – either very gently pinch the lens in the eye and remove it, or place your index finger on the lens and slide it onto the eyelid, where it will roll up – and then put it into the case with solution.
- put lenses into solution that is always fresh – the solution cleans, disinfects and moisturises the lenses. Replace the case regularly – approx. once every 3 months (or every time you run out of solution and buy a new one – practically every pack also includes a case.
- if you don’t wear the lenses for a longer time, it is also necessary to change the solution in which they are stored – approx. once a week
- try to blink more often – this moisturises the lenses while wearing them and keeps them comfortable
- if you are in a dusty or smoky environment, consider moisturising drops – they add comfort when wearing. They must be moisturising drops for contact lenses.
- do not sleep in lenses and do not wear them if your eyes are not 100% healthy
